Industry: Aquaculture / RAS
Location: Rjukan, Norway

Project Overview

AMOF Fjell Process Technology AS is proud to have delivered the drying and energy recovery systems for the advanced sludge treatment plant at Hima Seafood’s new RAS facility in Rjukan. Developed in close collaboration with Sterner AS, this project marks an important step towards more sustainable land-based aquaculture.

With an ambition to produce 9,000 tons of trout annually in a responsible and eco-friendly way, Hima Seafood has invested in state-of-the-art technology based on Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) – significantly reducing water usage through continuous purification and reuse.

Technical Solution

Sludge is an unavoidable byproduct in aquaculture. Traditionally considered waste, modern technology now makes it possible to transform sludge into a valuable resource.

The delivered system includes:

  • Thickening and dewatering of sludge
  • Hygienisation and drying in a combined process
  • Heat recovery, where residual heat from the sludge process is used to warm the facility’s buildings

The integrated solution meets the requirements of the Fertiliser Regulations, producing a high-quality organic fertiliser that is used in agriculture – a clear example of circular resource utilisation.

Collaboration and Innovation

Sterner AS led the project and developed the complete process solution, with AMOF Fjell supplying the drying and energy recovery technology. The project was carried out in close collaboration with Eyvi, resulting in a robust, energy-efficient and sustainable facility.

A Model for the Future of Aquaculture

With the completion of this sludge treatment plant, Hima Seafood demonstrates that high-volume fish production can be achieved without compromising environmental responsibility. The investment in cutting-edge technology sets a new standard for sustainability in aquaculture and serves as a model for how collaboration, innovation and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
